- FORA 400 is a water quenched martensitic steel with a typical hardness of 400HB (42.5 HRC) constituting a real answer to abrasive wear.
- Thanks to its toughness its elevated hardness, its high yield strength, FORA400 can be used wherever a wear resistant to wear by sliding or by moderate impacts is required.
- Compared to conventional steels, such as S355, FORA 400 offers a real benefit to the equipment life times and permits a significant reduction in the design thickness since its wear resistance is up to 30 times longer than S355 grade. Moreover, FORA400 is very easily welded and has good forming properties thereby contributing to ease of fabrication.
Cutting
All the classical thermal cutting process are possible with FORA400 (gas, plasma, laser). Plate between 4 to 40 mm (0.16" to 1.6") do not require pre-heating provided that the thermal cutting is performed at a temperature greater than 40 mm (1.6") preheating at 100-150c (200 - 300F) is recommended.
Machining
Drilling and milling should be performed with supercarburized cobalt high-speed steels type HSSCO Using wherever possible an oil lubricant. However, classical high -speed steels can be used.
Welding
The chemical analysis with a low carbon content, FORA400 shows very good welding characteristic It can be welded in easy conditions in total safety. Welding consumables are generally E7018 or E13018 types according to AWS A5-1 or AWS A5-5. Welded surface must be dry, clean and superficially ground in order to eliminate any rust, scale, grease, or paint traces as well as any gas-cutting ridges.
WELDING PROCESS - SAW, SMAW, FCAW, MIG, MAG (GMAW) and TIG. Heat input limited to 10-30KJ/cm with max interpass temperature of 200oc (392oF).
PRE-HEATING - FORA400 can be welded without crack risk and without preheating up to a combined plate thickness 50mm (2"). For higher thickness, the following condition is recommended.

- FORA500 is a water quenched martensitic steel, with a 500HB (51.5 HRC) with typical hardness, resistant to very severe abrasion wear.
- Thanks to its mechanical properties, good toughness, high hardness, and strength, the FORA500 steel can be used wherever a resistance to wear by sliding is required and where 400HB steels do not provide sufficiently long service life.
- Compared to conventional steels, such as S355, FORA500 offers a real improvement on the life time of equipment, up to 6 times longer than for a classical soft steel and also permits a significant reduction in the design thickness.
Cutting
All the classical thermal cutting process are compatible with FORA500 (gas, plasma, laser). Plate between 8 to10 mm (0.3" to 0.4") thick need not to pre-heated if thermal cutting is performed at temperature higher than 10oc (50oF). Where this is not the case or where plates have thickness higher than 10mm (0.4") preheating at 100-150oc (200-300oF) is recommended. Cutting by water jet can also be performed temperature greater than 40 mm (1.6") preheating at 100-1500c (200 - 300oF) is recommended.

Drilling and milling should be performed with supercarburized cobalt high-speed steels type HSSCO wherever possible an oil lubricant. However, classical high -speed steels can be used.
